Karyoupolis is a medieval-byzantine town in the interior of the Mani peninsula.
The ruins of the buildings and the fortifications of the city remained unnoticed and neglected until there were discovered again recently, after the wildfires of 2007.
The hill was inhabited probably since the early Byzantine period. The town flourished when Mystras became important (13th, 15th century) and followed a somewhat parallel historical path with Mystras. It was abandoned -like Mystras- in the mid-19th century.
