Mavrovouni is a village south of Gythio which today is a popular resort. On the highest point of Mavrovouni, there is a castle named 'Goulades' or 'Beanka' or 'Melissi'.
The castle was built by the local lord Tzanetos Grigorakis (or Tzanibeis) in 1795 when he was the bey of Mani.
The castle was destroyed by canon balls from the Turkish fleet in 1803, becasuse Tzanetos was supplied with gunpowder by the French.
