Topographical Tables by Hopf |
Karl Hopf (or Charles Hopf, 1832 - 1873) was a German historian, expert in the history of medieval and Frankish Greece.
The “Hopf's Topographical Tables” are lists of Frankish fiefs and castles in the Peloponnese in the 14th and 15th centuries, contained in Hopf’s work:
“Chroniques gréco-romanes inédites ou peu connues” (Berlin 1873)
Below are presented all these with some formatting and modifications to facilitate the modern reader. The various toponyms in Greek are also attributed and links are given to castles contained in Kastrologos site.

List of 1377
From Hopf (pp. 227-229) based on a document in Italian from the archive of the Knights of Malta titled “Quisti sono li castelli che madama ave in lo princepato de Achaya”. Referred to also as List of 1364, due to a chronological error by Hopf.
The list was compiled to be used by Queen Joanna I of Naples who intended to lease the Frankish possessions of the Morea to the order of the Knights of St. John of Rhodes (later of Malta).

List of 1463
From Hopf (pp. 202-203) based on the chronicle Annali Veneti e del Mondo by the Venetian historian Stefano Magno.
The list (in 3 parts) contains :
a) castles held by the Venetians in Peloponnese,
b) castles held by the Turks in Peloponnese
c) castles captured in that period by the Venetians in Peloponnese
1463 was the first year of the first Venetian-Ottoman war (1463-1470), when the Venetians were trying to get land in Peloponnese in the aftermath of the Ottoman conquest of 1460.
The language of the list is the Venetian dialect.
Remarks: The word vel means “or”. The phrase se perse means «it was lost» (to the Turks). The phrase ut supra means “as above”.
