The tower which is in a very good condition (due to recent renovation) located in the small island o Kranai, in Gythio. It was built in 1829 and it was the house of the bey of Mani Tzanetakis Grigorakis. Since 1898, the island is connected to the land.
The tower today houses the museum of Mani
According to the Greek Mythology, in Kranai Paris and Helen of Troy spent a night escaping from Sparta before sailing to Troy. Paris forgot his helmet there, hence the name of the island (in Greek: helmet="kranos")
