Remains of a fortification on the peal Paliokastro, part of the Lykeion mountain range, overlooking from SW the village Kaparelli of Argolis in Peloponnese.
Judging from the setting of the remaining walls, the castle covered an area of 32,000 sq.m. inside of a perimeter of over 700m. In other words, it was a large fortification for such a remote and unknown location. That means that probably it was protecting a settlement, and it was not a military fort.
The wall of the south side is ruined but visible in its entire length of 200m reaching at some parts a maximum height of 2m. It is constructed of semi-worked stones without mortar. There are also traces of a western wall which are hidden by the growth. The other two sides, northern and eastern, are not fortified being naturally protected by the steep cliffs.
We have no info by historical sources for this fortification, therefore we know nothing about its history and the chronology of the construction.
The type of the wall structure indicate a chronology some time in the middle Byzantine period. Maybe the fortification was built and used as a refuge (perhaps not permanent) of the local population in turbulent times (such as the invasion of the Slavs in the 7th century). In any case, it seems that was abandoned long before the Frankish period.
the blue spot is the parking spot, the red line is the preserved wall and the yellow outline is the rest of the perimeter
