There is an imposing rock dominating the village of Nestani in Arcadia named "Goulas" (meaning fort in Turkish). At the top of the rock there are a few remains of a Byzantine settlement and fortress. The name of the settlement was Tsipiana.
The castle was built by the Byzantine general Andronikos Asan after the Destruction of Nykli in 1296. According to another theory, the Franks built first a castle there in the 13th century, which was captured by the Byzantines of Mystras after the battle of Nykli.
