The remains of a small fort at the northern pier of the port of Chios.
It could be considered part of the big castle of Chios, but since it is in a small distance and is somehow independent, it is presented separately in this site.
A castle existed in this position since the Genoan period of Chios island (13th century and later) for the defense of the harbor. Its name was then Porporella ή Castel della Catena. The ruins we see today are the remains of the fort as it was rebuilt in 1713 and in 1748 by the Ottomans.
In 1827 the French philelene general Fabvier leading Greek troops tried to capture Chios and bombarded the port. Bourtzi was hit and part of it was destroyed.
