Southwest of the village of Kipouries, in Chios, lies the ruined Byzantine metochio (dependency) of Agios Georgios Zartoulidas, once part of the Holy Monastery of Mounda.
The metochi may be identified with the medieval village of T’ Aggelou or S. Angelo.
History
Researcher G. Zolotas (1923) identified the specific metochi of Agios Georgios with that mentioned in a chrysoboul (April 1259) of the co-emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos, which refers to Metochio of Agios Georgios in the area of Angelou, situated with all that belonged to it and that came to it by donation and purchase and together with a mill.
According to Zolotas, the Byzantine village T’ Angelou was located “Between Diechos and Fyton, north of the Monastery of Moundon” and the area of T' Angelou mentioned in the chrysoboul of Michael Palaiologos is at the point where is located the fortified metochi of Agios Georgios of Zartoulida.
This identification seems logical and inevitably leads to the (unconfirmed) hypothesis that the fortified metochi is perhaps the Sant Angelo recorded on old maps of Chios (see ARTWORK, above).
The fortified complex of Zartoulida at some point became property of the Monastery of Moundon (which was probably founded around the 15th century, i.e. it is newer than the metochi).
After the destruction of the Monastery of Mounda at the end of the 19th century, its properties were gradually sold off and the Metochi of Zartoulida was purchased by the monk Constantios Fytousis (from Pitious) who lived there until his death, around 1970. Today the metochi has been inherited by his relatives. Constantiou.
Structure, Fortification & Buildings
It is an almost square enclosed area with sides of 26 meters and an area of about 675 sq.m. Inside, ruins of the buildings of the metochio are preserved at some height.
In the center, a large building dominates, which we assume was originally the main defensive tower, which seems to have later lost its defensive character, having openings on the lower floors as well and no longer having any special fortification elements.
Outside the fortified area of the old metochio, there is a well-preserved newer chapel of Agios Georgios. There are also some other buildings around the chapel, remnants of the estate that the monk Constantios maintained there until 1970.
At the northeastern edge of the area surrounding the church is the simple tomb of the monk Constantios.
A dirt road leads to the metochi from Kipouries, but it is in very poor condition.
