One of the many small forts -the so called “koules”- built by the Turks after 1886 following the outbreak of the Cretan revolution that year.
The Koules of Vathiakos, built on the hill south of the village, served a dual purpose. First, it controlled the passages to Messara and further to Sfakia. Secondly, it protected the Turkish village Vathiakos, which was the Turkish center of the area, inhabited mainly by Janissaries. The Koules still survives in not so bad condition. The east wall and most of its roof have collapsed.
