A byzantine tower in the archaeological site of Ancient Eleftherna at the northern slopes of mount Idi, 30 km from Rethymno.
Eleftherna was an ancient city that was founded in the 9th BC century and flourished in the Hellenistic and the Roman periods.
It was rebuilt in the early-Byzantine period between 430-450 AD. It was a major city, since it was the seat of the Bishop.
Eleftherna started to decline after an earthquake in 796 and was destroyed after the Arab conquest (824).
