A large Byzantine castle 6.7 km south of Chania, on a hill above the monastery of Agia Kyriaki east of the modern village Varypetro.
It was an ancient castle that was used also by the Romans and the Byzantines. It was in use from the classical period until the first decades of the Venetian occupation. It obtained its final form in the 10th century after the recapture of Crete by the Byzantine general Nicephoros Fokas.
