Askyfou is a small plateau (altitude 730m) , 50km south of Chania, part of an area known as Sfakia.
In 1821 the Greeks rebelled and liberated the area but later in 1823 the Turks returned and torched the villages. This fortress was built after the Cretan revolution of 1866.
Actually, there are two small forts there very close to each other. On adjacent hills.
