Malaxa is a mountainous region overlooking the Souda bay, a natural fortress for the coastal area of the bay.
After 1860, a Turkish Koules (small fort) was built there that was captured by the Greeks in 1987. After that battle the koules was destroyed and only the ruins of the tower are still visible.
It is possible however, that the tower pre-existed as a Venetian watchtower.
