During the second half of the 19th century, the Turks built a lot of small forts in Crete -the so called “Koules” (pl. kouledes)- in their effort to control the insurgence of the Greek population.
One of them is the Koules of Plakia in the south coast of Rethymno prefecture, on a hill with a fantastic view to the Libyan see.
