One of the many small forts -the so called “koules”- built by the Turks after 1886 following the outbreak of the Cretan revolution that year.
This koules was at the location “Nero tis Petras” on the old road from Rethymno to Chania, north of the village Kalonychtis (or Kalonyktis). It was rather isolated because it does not appear to have visual contact with other fortifications. Most probably it was part of a defensive network from which nothing else is saved.
