As a rule, museums are not part of the scope of the site of Kastrologos. This building however is what’s left from the legendary Venetian castle of Chalkis, the so called “Castle of Negreponte”.

It was built most probably in the 15th century, when the construction of the fortification of Chalkis finished, shortly before the capture of the city by the Ottomans (1470).

It was at the edge of the moan of the castle and it was, perhaps, a defensive tower. It became a museum in 1981.

The museum is located at 4 Skalkota Street, in the area of Agia Paraskevi. Behind the museum is the Army’s Infantry School in which a part of the medieval walls is also preserved. These are the sides of a part of the moat of the castle.
The museum itself is located on a bastion of the castle that was saved from demolition.
The fact that it was a bastion is best observed on the back side of the museum (photos 6,7,8,10,11).
