Small ruined castle at the top of the hill on the west side of the village of Ano Voutaina, Messinia.
History
The castle was probably Frankish, built in the 13th or 14th century. The only reference to it from a historical source is in the Chronicle of Tocco. This anonymous chronicle narrates the events of the period 1375 to 1425, focusing on the Tocco family (counts of Kefallonia with a leading role in the Despotate of Epirus and the Principality of Achaia). In the chronicle, there is a passage about looting some Greek villages in 1422 by Ercole Tocco. Among them was “Goutaina”.
The castle is included in the list of forts occupied by the Venetians in 1463 as “Vutina”.
Structure, Fortification & Buildings
The hill is littered with ruins of walls and buildings, but there are no visible wall remains at any significant height. The only outstanding element is the ruins of a tower at the top of the hill. Actually, only one corner is preserved and an arched opening together with the cistern at the ground-floor of the tower.
