A renovated tower in the monastery of Gardiki, south of the village Amfeia (old name “Gardiki”) of Messinia.
The monastery was founded in the end 14th century and was completely reconstructed around the end of the 17th century, during the second Venetian period. It was abandoned after the Greek war of Independence in the 19th century.
In 1957 the monastery (and the tower) was renovated and until 1977 was used by the church as a hospice.
The tower must have been there since the 17th century reconstruction. It must have been through some major repairs during the 1957 renovation. We cannot know to what degree the works have changed its original form.
