One of the towers of the fortification of the Esfigmenou monastery in Athos mountain. This one, at the northern seaside wall, is the most impressive.
The monastery exists since the 11th century but it was destroyed several times, mostly by Saracen pirates. It became again prosperous after the 18th century and passed a reconstruction phase during the first half of the 19th century. Most of the towers of the perimeter were constructed or reconstructed during that period.
