The monastery of Koutloumousiou was founded in the 10th or 11th century. The name probably originated from a SeljukTurk named Koutloumus who became a Christian and lived as a monk there.
The monastery was destroyed by a fire in 1497 and had to be reconstructed in the following decades. The defensive tower is located at the western end of the south wing and was built in 1508. Today it houses the “ikonofylakion” (the icons’ vault) of the complex.
