The Monastery of Zygos was one of the monasteries of Athos. After the 4th crusade and the Fall of 1204, it was reconstructed and for a short period, it was a Frankish castle. Hence, "Fragokastro"
History
The name "Zygos" is mentioned for the first time in 942, in a document regarding a dispute of the local inhabitants with the monks of Athos.
The monastery was founed in 991 and it was part of the Athhos community.
Fore some reason, the place was abandoned already in 1199. After the 4th Crusade and the Fall of 1204, an unknown Frankish knight came here and made the monastery his castle. and his base for operations against the rich monasteries of Athos. The Franc was forced to leave in 1211 after the monks had complained to the Pope.
