Pyrgoudia is an area which belongs as a dependency to the Athonic monastery of Iviron. The mission of the tower was probably the surveillance of the lands of the monastery. It must have been also used as an observatory, being at the narrowest point of the Athos peninsula.
It is reported for the first time in 1259. It was still in good condition in 1839. Today lies in ruins.
