Remains of a medieval tower that were discovered rather recently (in 2001) inside the town of Atalanti in Phthiotida in Central Greece.
The tower has a square layout measuring 6.90✖6.90m at its base which is gradually reducing upwards to 6.40m. The maximum preserved height today is 2.25m.
History
The history of the tower and the date of its construction are not known. The first time that the town of Atalanti appears on record is in the Partitio Romaniae (the agreement for the division of the Byzantine lands between the crusaders of the 4th Crusade after the capture of Constantinople in 1204).
In that document the town is mentioned as Talantum. It was one of the 4 ports of the Frankish Duchy of Athens. After 1311, when the mercenaries of the Catalan company prevailed in Central Greece, the town is referred to as Talandi. In this historical context and judging from the type of its construction, the tower could be dated in the Frankish period.
