The fortified tower of Ypsilotera is a monastery and, moreover, the strongest fortress on the island of Naxos. Initially, it must have been a regular fortress and after various modifications over the centuries, it became a monastery.
History
It was founded in 1660 by Iacovos Kokkos who came of a family of Greek-orthodox nobles who strongly opposed the Venetian administration and the feudalism that continued to prevail in the island, long after the Venetians had gone.
