Remains of a tower and of other monastic buildings on a hill above the little seaside settlement of Xiropotamos near Ierissos in Chalkidiki.
History
This was one of the more than 70 towers which protected the dependencies of the Monasteries of Mount Athos in Chalkidiki. The tower of Ozolimnos was part of a metochi that belonged to the Xiropotamos monastery. According to Athos documents, the area belonged to the monastery since, at least, the 14th century. Perhaps, the tower was built during that first period.
Ozolimnos means stinking lake and comes from a swamp by the sea with a surface around 500,000 sq.m.

Approach to the monument: |
A small, easy-to-miss road sign points to Xiropotamos, right, just before entering Ierissos from the west. After 10min we arrive there. At the point where the asphalt road ends, continue uphill on foot for another 10min (don’t turn right to the beach). |
Entrance: |
Free access. There is a fence. |
