A tower on a tall hill east of the village Kalloni in Laconia. It seems to be in rather good condition, but it remains unknown.
Location & Strategic Scope
The location of the tower is difficult to be accessed. It is at a high relative altitude, while there is no road (rural at least) going near the tower. The mountainous area that surrounds it has no crops or trees or livestock activities. Nor is there a visible trail for hiking to the top. This isolation and difficulty in approaching explains why the tower is kept in relatively good condition compared to other medieval towers.
History
We know nothing about the history of the tower. Most probably, it was built by the Btzantines of Mystras in the 14th or 15th century, like the nearby castle of Zarafona (8km to the east.)
However, we cannot completely rule out the possibility that it is Frankish, built at the same time as the (Frankish) castle of Geraki, which is located 15 kilometers to the SE.
Structure, Fortification & Buildings
The tower is almost square in size. The dimension of its base is 7✖7m.
The tower is at the edge of a fortification enclosure (observed by satellite, but not from below) which has a perimeter of 125 meters covering an area of almost 1000sq.m. There were probably other buildings as well inside the enclosure.
