Remains of a fortification at the eastern side of the volcanic crater of Nisyros island, on a rock that has been formed by frozen lava bubbles.
History
The history of the castle is not known. It does don seem to have been an organized military fort neither a settlement. It was probably used as a refuge by the local population during pirate raids. This is concluded by its location (hidden in the interior of the island), the lack of any record about it and its unsophisticated construction.
Most probably it was created in the 14th century at the same period that the neighboring settlements of Nikia and Emporeios were developed. It was the period that the Knights of Rhodes (of the Order of St. John) ruled the island and the rest of Dodecanese.
Structure, Fortification & Buildings
The fortification is in ruins. There are only remains of a cistern, a church and traces of the walls in low height.
