Two kilometers northeast of the town of Chortiatis there is a hill called Kastri, on which the ruins of fortifications are preserved, at an altitude of 455 meters. It is a fortress or fortified settlement from the Byzantine period.
Apart from the certainty that Kastri was Byzantine, there is unfortunately insufficient evidence for a more precise dating of the construction.
Structure, Fortification & Buildings
At the top of the hill there is a plateau in the shape of a trapezium surrounded by a wall, with a perimeter of about 200 meters. The wall is preserved in a ruined state. Most of it has fallen into the steep hillsides or been covered by vegetation. But its trace on the ground is evident, while its perimeter is also visible in the satellite image.
The ground inside the fortifications is flat. In the southwest corner is the best preserved part of the wall, with a height of 1.5 to 2.5 meters. Another part of it is located in the middle of the north side. Judging from the minimal surviving sections, the wall was strong with a thickness of 2m. and a height that reached at least 3m, made of stones of different sizes with binding mortar between them and fragments of tiles.
Outside the wall and along the steep sides of the hill there are many stone piles and ruins of buildings, probably houses. The largest ruin is on the less sloping northern side. Also inside and outside the wall there are many fragments of tiles.
Among the ruins outside the wall on the north side, there is a vaulted subterranean structure with mortar on its inner walls. Perhaps it was a cistern.
