Small fortress above Fontana beach on the east coast of Schinoussa in the Lesser Cyclades.
According to the surface findings, the area has been inhabited since at least the Hellenistic Period. The final configuration of the fortification took place during the Venetian period, perhaps around the 15th century like most Venetian fortresses in the Cyclades.
Structure, Fortification & Buildings
The fortress is located on the top of the hill of Prophet Elias, on the southeast side of the island and occupies an area of approximately 90✖17 m.
Its wall is 0.80 m wide, with large boulders on both sides and a core of small stones and soil. Two towers, one on the north-east and one on the south side of the fortress, several walls of buildings inside and the remains of a single-aisled basilica, covered by later constructions, have been identified.
The surface finds are of various periods, prehistoric (mainly on the north-western slope), Hellenistic and Roman, mainly on the western slope of the hill, where many unsealed amphora handles were also found.
