The tower of Stergianos is actually an old, small Venetian fort.
Stergianos perhaps was a village once, but nowadays is a neighborhood of Vasilies south of Heraclion in Crete. The first report of the tower has been found in a document of 1226.
The structure indicates a Venetian origin, but the fort was also used by the Ottomans who did not make major modifications.
During the Cretan revolution of 1897, the tower was briefly captured by the Greek fighters. They were not able to defend it and had to evacuate and in the process burnt the tower. Apparently that destruction was not complete since several parts of the tower still stand.
