Few Remains
|
Few remains of an almost square tower on a hill west of Paleochori near Mandra in western Attica.
In this region -western Attica- there are ruins of several rural towers and forts, most of which are ancient. In the classical period, around here were the frontiers between Athens, Megara and Boeotia.
The tower in question is dated also in antiquity (of the late classical period) but the use of mortar in the stone construction indicates that it was used also in the Middle Ages.
This type of towers with long visibility range in antiquity were usually phryctoriae (communication towers using sets of torches).
Structure, Fortification & Buildings
The dimensions of the base o the tower are 9.20✖10.5/10.7μ. The thickness of its walls are 1.10 to 1.20m. It is preserved at the maximum height of 84cm.
Northeast of the tower at a distance of 71m the is a cistern of 2.15m diameter, 2.50m deep.
