A coastal tower from the late Venetian period on the deserted island Peluso in southeastern Zakynthos.
History
During the Venetian period, the deserted island Peluso (modern Greek name: Kalonisi) was given to the Catholic monk Angelos Salviatis who in 1705 built there the monastery of Evangelistria and the church of Theotokos.
The monastery was severely damaged in the World War II when it was bombarded by the Germans. It was destroyed completely in the earthquake of 1953.
The purpose of the tower must have been the protection of the port (or the only accessible coast) of the monastery. It is reasonable to assume that it was built in the same period with the monastery, i.e. in the beginning of the 18th century.
