Α rock in a prominent position and good natural protection. It was a refuge for the local population during the Saracen and Turkish raids of the past, but it is not certain that it was ever a real castle, although there are remains of Byzantine buildings on the top.
But maybe it was a regular castle, because the castle lists (Annali Veneti etc.) record in Laconia a castle named Asopo or Asopes in 1463 (Venetian), and in 1467 (Ottoman), while in 1471 is noted as Aspes (?) and Venetian. It is not certain but maybe the lists refer to this castle.
