A fortress of an unknown period in the middle of the gorge of Petroussa, at the northern part of the prefecture of Drama, between the villages Pyrgoi and Petroussa.
In the Early-Byzantium period this was a rather well developed region. There are several remains from that era. A paved road through the gorge and through the mountains of Rhodope connected the plain of Philippoi in Macedonia with Philippoupolis (modern Plovdiv in Bulgaria). Castles and towers had been built along the road and the fortress of this page was, apparently, one of them.
However we do not have, for the moment, further info about its history.
The fortification protects the access to a rocky protrusion that surveys the southern part of the gorge. It covers an area of c. 500 sq.m. It was a small facility and obviously a purely military installation, not a settlement.
The forification was built on only two sides. It was reinforced by two rectangular towers and a moat/trap.
