A castle and fortified settlement at a plateau at the top of the rocky mountain of Galatiani in the northern part of Kalymnos island.
The settlement was created in the 7th century, in a period when the Saracens started to plunder the Aegean islands.
Apparently, the settlement was not inhabited for a long time. It must have been abandoned relatively soon, since the access was very difficult. But it certainly was in use as a refuge for the people of the island for many centuries.
The settlement is extended on an area of around 6000 sq.meters. It is protected by a strong wall 1.60–2m thick on its south and western sides. The other sides are not fortified because the steep rock offers more than adequate protection. At the eastern edge of the settlement lies the church of Panagia Galatiani, one of the famous churches of the island.
