A few remains of a dry-stone fortification on a low hill that overlooks the field from the village of Fournoi in Argolis to the sea, from where the hill is about 2 kilometers away.
History
The history of the castle is not known. It does not appear to have been an ancient fortification. It was perhaps built during the Middle Ages – exactly when is unknown – to protect the population of the small valley from pirate raids, as the place is vulnerable to attack from the sea.
Structure, Fortification & Buildings
The hill is rather low, but the upper part is quite difficult to access, and so it has some natural protection. On the south side there is a cliff, while on the north the slope has a very steep slope.
Today the castle is in very poor condition and only ruins survive at a low height on the north side.
Peppas, who visited the area in the late 1980s, did not find much more, but he noticed remains of walls on the east and west sides as well.
The ruins of the walls are dry stone made of relatively massive semi-finished stones. Among them there are also smaller stones. There are also piles of small stones.
The whole picture shows a rough fortification that was not ancient, but probably not Frankish either. It must not have been a military fortress, but a small shelter for the population of the valley. For its construction, building material from an older settlement on the hill may have been used.
Lower on the southern side of the hill, terraces have been constructed in more recent times to form small arable areas. These terraces seem to have been constructed with material from the castle, which explains its destruction.
West of the castle, near the sea, there are also remains of an ancient tower.
