A ruined tower on the coastal, upcountry road that connects the settlements of Loutro and Pigadi, in Magnesia, in the bay of Achilleio, on the west side of the entrance of the Pagasitic Gulf.
The location is 3km SE of the town Pteleos and at the foothill of the Pteleos Castle.
Apparently, the tower was a coastal defense tower, part of the castle of Pteleos, and was probably built at the same time as the castle, i.e. around the middle of the 14th century. In other words, the tower was Venetian and remained Venetian possession until 1470 when the area was occupied by the Turks.
The tower must have been part of a fortification that protected the lower part of the castle and the settlement, while it also supervised the closed, leeward bay, which for the ships of the Middle Ages was a very good port. It must have been primarily a defensive tower. At one time it seems that it was used to store salt, hence its name (“Alatopyrgos” means Salt-tower).
The tower is not in good condition but it is still preserved at some height that reaches 4.7m. The length of its best preserved side is almost 7.5m.
