An ancient, obscure castle. At the end of the 19th century a Turkish fort was built there.
We do not have a lot of information about the castle. It is believed that it was created around 400 BC because there are some findings from that period. There are no records of use by the Romans or the Byzantines. After 1881, a Turkish fort was built at the site as a check-point on the borderline between Greece and Turkey. That's why it is known in the region also as “Stathmos”. The cylindrical tower and the walls around it are from that last period.
There are also visible parts of the ancient walls at the south and southeast sides. The site has never been excavated. Only some ancient Macedonian tombs have been unearthed.
