Remains of a big cylindrical tower on the islet of Agioleni in the bay of Sagiada in Epirus, in the area of the salt pans. Next to the tower lies the chapel of Agia Eleni (hence the name of the place).
The tower is preserved to a height up to 2m and its diameter exceeds 8m. It was a large and strong tower and its original height must have been more than 10m.
Obviously it was built there to protect the valuable salt pans. We know nothing about its history. Most probably it was built by the Venetians who owned the region between 1400 and 1479. During that relatively short period, they developed the salt production and built fortifications like La Bastia (modern Sagiada) and the Strovili fortress .
So, it was probably a Venetian tower, but we cannot be sure. It could belong to any other era, from the early-Byzantine period to post-Byzantine times.
