The ruins of a castle on a hill above the artificial lake of Mornos at the location of the acropolis of the ancient city Kallion.

History

Kallion was an important city of the Aetolian League but it was destroyed by the Gauls in 270 BC and was never rebuilt. Much later, before the 10th century AD, a slavic village named “Velouhovo” took shape at the same location.

During the Byzantine period, the region was almost abandoned by the Greek population who preferred to move to more prosperous lands in the East.

The acropolis became active and was fortified again in the 13th century by the Franks. Velouhovo was at the border with the Despotate of Epirus and the castle became very important. The Frankish administration was prudent and the place developed and prospered for almost 2 centuries.

The castle like most of Western Greece was occupied by the Ottomans around 1450. The Turks did not use the castle which was soon in ruins.
