Castle Description
Text: Dr. Michael Losse, Singen (Hohentwiel), Germany (08.07.2021)General Description
Located on an isolated, flat rocky hill southwest of Chamés, Kástro Tságrias is a large Hellenistic pýrgos, which was most-probably reused in Byzantine/medieval times. In modern times the castle served as a farm, as evidenced by the remains of later buildings and installations.
The lower wall layers of the Pyrgos are preserved in situ. Many of its stones are installed nearby in field terraces. Many stones of the ancient building were removed for reuse for new buildings.
Not far away in northeastern direction one can find the sparse remains of a another Pýrgos, named Chamés, which is also the name of a peak. The Pýrgos is situated on its western slope.
Access
By car to the church Agios Ioannis Tsagrias. Freely accessible via collapsed field terraces.
History of the castle
“Tsangria” is a name handed down since ancient times; numerous finds from the classical and Roman periods are known from the region (cf. Arfaras/Melissourgaki-Arfara, p. 64).
