Paleohora is the medieval capital of Kythira. It was founded in the 12th century by settlers from Monemvasia who mened it "Agios Dimitrios".
It is located on a 100m hill, not visisble from the sea, next to the canyon "Kako Lagadi".
Despite its natural protection and fortifications, the city was destroyed by the Turkish pirate Barbarossa in 1537. The inhabitants who survived were sold as slaves and the place was abandoned.
