Remains of a coastal tower on a rocky low hill on Cape Kalogeros of the Molyvoti peninsula in the Rhodope, between two lagoons located east of Porto Lagos. Next to the tower is the chapel of the 12 Apostles which is visible from a distance.
The peninsula is called “Molyvoti” in translation of the Turkish name “Koursumlou” which was in use until 1920.
The tower is probably Byzantine. Due to its location, it is safe to assume that it was an observation tower, i.e. a vigla. Its purpose was to survey the sea to the south, due to the excellent field of vision that the position has.
The vigla had visual contact with various castles in the area: Poroi, Peritheorio, Maroneia, Polystylon and, farther, with Polyantho and Mosynopolis.
We know nothing about the history of tower. We have no evidence to help date it. All we can say for sure is that it is a medieval construction (due to the use of binding mortar). It is somewhat reminiscent, mainly due to its location, of the tower of the Gatos near Mesimvria.
Very close to the hill, about 1 kilometer northeast, are the ruins of an ancient city that has been identified with Strymi, founded by the Thasians in the 7th BC. century which was abandoned at the beginning of the 3rd century BC. The tower, however, does not seem to have anything to do with ancient Strymi.
The tower was four-sided. Its surviving dimensions are 7.0✖4.5 meters and the maximum height reaches up to 2.5 meters.
Its construction consists of stones of different sizes with a binder material between them and ceramics.
