Few Remains
|
Very few remains of a fortification on a low hill, close to the square of the village Mitopolis in Achaea.
Most probably the remains belong to the Frankish castle of Mitopolis.
According to the Aragonese version of the Chronicle of Moreas, Mitopolis was the seat of one of the 16 baronies founded in Peloponnese in 1209 after the conquest by the Latins. The first baron was the French knight Guibert de Cors (or d’ Escors) who built a castle there around the middle of 13th century.
However it is possible that de Cors was not the fist Baron, as the dates don’t match. In any case, he was killed in the battle of Karydi (1258) and later, in 1280, his fiefs were sold by his daughter Margueritte to Robert de la Trémoille or Dramelay, who was the Baron of the neighboring Chalandritsa.
In 1316, the Assises de Romanie records that the lord of Mitopolis was Nicola Deamelay who had inherited Chalandritsa. By 1325, Chlandrista was sold to the Genoan Martino Zaccaria from Chios and Mitopolis must have been part of the deal.
Mitopolis is not mentioned by the sources after 1316 and it is likely that its castle was not in use after the beginning of the 14th century.
