The Litahritsia fortress is on a rocky hill at the center of the city of Ioannina. It had an important role in the defene of the city being a powerful bastion of the main castle.
History
The bastion was built by Ali pasha around 1800 in the place of an older castle from the time of the Norman Bohemund.
In 1805, Ali-pasha built a palace at the top of the hill, above the bastion. Later he built two more palaces for his sons Veli and Muchtar.
The palaces and part of the bastion were destroyed by fire in 1820 when the Ottoman army had besieged the city in response to Ali’s rebellion against the sultan.
Current Condition
Today the palaces have been restored (almost rebuilt) and the complex looks in good condition. But from the bastion itself only the base remains and part of the walls.
