The so called tower of Koromilia is a fortified cave, ie a cave protected by a wall. It was a skete, a dependency of the old monastery of Taxiarches which was at the plateau right above the location of the tower.

To the north of the village of Koromilia, near Kastoria, in western Macedonia, there is a 2km-long gorge formed by the river Ladopotamos. On the rocky, steep slopes of the gorge there are many caves which in the Byzantine period were askitaria (hermitages). The cave with the tower was such a hermitage.

The monastery of Taxiarches, to which this tower belonged, was founded some time during the Byzantine period and was next to a fortified Byzantine settlement (castle of Koromilia) of which no traces have been preserved.

The monastery was destroyed in 1716 by the Turks. Some of the monks managed to survive then, by seeking refuge inside the cave of the tower of Koromilia.

The opening of the cave is 15m high and 20m wide. The wall in front of it has a Γ-shaped layout. Its height is about 10m and its total length 15m.
There were two openings on the wall, one of them seems to have been shut with mortar and stones at a later time. The tower does not cover completely the opening of the cave. Apparently its size was bigger but part of it has been destroyed.
