There is another similar tower on the road from southwest. It is obvious that the two towers belonged to the monastery and their primary function was defensive. Moreover, they must have had also a residential role accommodating monks, workers or perhaps visitors of the monastery.

The Name of the Castle

The two towers are called the “towers of Karaϊskakis” after the hero of the Greek Revolution of 1821 Georgios Karaϊskakis who, in several occasions, was stationed in the monastery and had some of his men installed in the two towers. However, the towers pre-existed.

History

The monastery of Prousos was built in the 12th century and had a first major renovation in the late 16th century.

It is not known exactly when the two towers were built. Most probably they are constructions of the 18th century.
