Remains of a tower 8 km from Paliopyrgos on the road to Nafpaktos. Although not very close, Paliopyrgos took its name from this tower (“Paliopyrgos” means “old tower”).

History

The tower was built after 1787, around the end of the 18th century or the beginning of the 19th century, the latest. Its first owner was Anagnostis Kavanos who belonged to an old Byzantine family of the region and who had become a Kotzambasis (a rep of the Ottoman administration) reporting to the notorious Ali pasha of Ioannina.

According to the sources, the tower was used as a camp for the armed guard of Kanavos consisting of 60 Arvanites. So the building was rather a genuine defensive tower than a manor.

Structure, Fortification & Buildings

The tower was a 3-storey building of robust construction. The west and north sides are still standing while the other two are ruined.

Southeast of the tower, some more ruins are visible. Most probably they are from the auxiliary buildings, and possibly fortifications of the tower.
