Remains of a byzantine fortification on the hill of Episkopi in Ano Volos, in Thessaly.

The name of the hill, “Episkopi” means Diocese and comes from the church of the Dormition of the Virgin which was the seat of the Bishop of Dimitrias after 1423, when the region was occupied by the Turks.

The initial Byzantine church was built there –most probably– in the late 13th century. The church was rebuilt in 1639, by Kallistos, Metropolitan of Demetrias.

On the hill there are remains of the Byzantine fortification: parts of the wall, foundations of a round tower, a cistern. Most probably the fortification was constructed in the same period with the original church, i.e. around the end of the 13th century.
