Atop the characteristic summit named Avgo (meaning “egg”) there is a fortress which is supposed to be Roman.
Unfortunately, we do not have more information about it.
The relatively good condition of the fort (for a roman), the type of construction, the form of the central tower etc give some indications that it was probably used in the Mid-Byzantine period as well.
The castle must have been important for the city-fortress of Xanthi and useful as a bastion and mainly as an observatory.
